"If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be wih you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you."
Obedience is irrigation.
Love is the the water.
The Spirit carves the channels.
Jesus' statement is not an equation: Love=obedience. We know this because he regularly chastises the religious people for obedience without love. Love necessarily leads to obedience, however. Just as water cannot help but saturate parched ground, so a loving disciple cannot help but obey her Lord.
The Spirit is given as a Helper to motivate and direct our love into action. He exposes the dry and parched ground in our soul and guides the water toward it. Fruitfulness is his aim. Since he is the Spirit of truth, he will not lie to us about the state of our soul. We may think love is present in every corner, but he will show us the lack of fruit. We may ignore our lack of fruit and dismiss it saying, "It's just because it's wintertime, nothing grows in winter." He will not let us blame our environment for our lack of fruit, however. He is the Spirit of truth. He will not merely expose our dry ground and leave us to the watering, however. He guides the love supplied from the Father toward the ground that needs it most.
The world receives no such help. It neither sees nor knows the Helper. Convinced that its desert is a rain forest and that its poisonous water tastes better, there is no fruit nor is there a perceived need for fruit.
For those who have the love of God poured into our hearts, we can drink deep and bear fruit, because the Spirit dwells with us and will be in us. May the fruit of the Spirit abound as we are filled with truth, guidance, and love.
