Sermon Passage: 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; James 1:14-15; Proverbs 16:5; 3:32; 12:22; 6:16-19; 1 Corinthians 6:11; Luke 18:9-14.
"Same-sex orientation is not a sin."
The World says: Homosexuality is an orientation.
The Bible says: Homosexuality is a sin.
What's a sin and what is not?
James 1:14-15 says the ACT of homosexuality is a sin and Matthew 5:28 says that even LUST of the HEART is sin, but let us be clear about one thing:
We all have "orientations" towards "abominations", for example:
- Theft, Greed, Alcoholism, Deceit (1 Cor 6:9-10)
- Arrogance (Prov 16:5)
- Devious (Prov 3:32)
- Lying (Prov 12:22)
- Haughtiness, violence, causing discord among people (Prov 6:16-19)
World: "You can't overcome your orientation. You are your orientation."
Bible: Christ overcomes your orientation so it doesn't define you. He helps you grow past it.
World: "Freedom is found in unhindered expression of our desires."
Bible: Freedom is found in unhindered expression of our created purpose.
Our purpose is to glorify God, which includes denial of your sinful orientations, whatever they may be.
The truest thing about you is your spiritual orientation.
Are you oriented toward your created purpose or expression of self? Are you oriented toward repentance and submission to Christ or self-affirmation and excusing your sinful orientation?
